I must admit, I'm getting a bit tired of the PX, although it has served me well. The LCD is pretty bad in bright light and the lack of manual options is limiting. And of course very small sensor. I don't use any of the effects, so it's just down to an image-recording device for me.
I have just advised my younger daughter (age 25) to get a Nikon P7800 as a first digital camera, after looking at all the options available at this price range here. The 7800 seems like a good place to start for her, she has had a Nikon film camera before, and this one offers a nice 28-200 mm. focal length, a built-in viewfinder, good ergonomics, and a swivel screen. Pretty much everything one needs in order to practise and decide what is important for you in a camera.
The search for a reasonable all-in-one compact for her has left me with renewed hopes that something will surface for me, too, ideally a serious environmentally-sealed compact with large sensor. I still don't want to go the way of a weather-resistant DSLR and lens(es), too much of a "statement" for me. I can't justify two cameras, let's say a GR and a weather-resistant DSLR for my work and hikes...so I'll bide my time until circumstances (maybe a trip abroad next year) will force me to make a decision one way or another.
Every time I get to the big city I am reminded that the Mediterranean area has great light, and it's a pleasure to take out a camera here. If any of you are looking for another photographic paradise, the area around the Mediterranean has to go on the list.
