I must admit, I'm getting a bit tired of the PX, although it has served me well. The LCD is pretty bad in bright light and the lack of manual options is limiting. And of course very small sensor. I don't use any of the effects, so it's just down to an image-recording device for me.

I have just advised my younger daughter (age 25) to get a Nikon P7800 as a first digital camera, after looking at all the options available at this price range here. The 7800 seems like a good place to start for her, she has had a Nikon film camera before, and this one offers a nice 28-200 mm. focal length, a built-in viewfinder, good ergonomics, and a swivel screen. Pretty much everything one needs in order to practise and decide what is important for you in a camera.

The search for a reasonable all-in-one compact for her has left me with renewed hopes that something will surface for me, too, ideally a serious environmentally-sealed compact with large sensor. I still don't want to go the way of a weather-resistant DSLR and lens(es), too much of a "statement" for me. I can't justify two cameras, let's say a GR and a weather-resistant DSLR for my work and hikes...so I'll bide my time until circumstances (maybe a trip abroad next year) will force me to make a decision one way or another.

Every time I get to the big city I am reminded that the Mediterranean area has great light, and it's a pleasure to take out a camera here. If any of you are looking for another photographic paradise, the area around the Mediterranean has to go on the list.

You've squeezed some great shots again from your PX but having used one I can understand your frustrations. I'm beginning to think that the big sensor thing is being a bit over blown unless you either enlarge (crop) or print poster size. The GRD4 produces great results from small sensor and I'm impressed with my new and very cheap GXR with the S10. The S10 is fairly well sealed although the extending lens tube could be a vulnerability. I suspect you would really like this combination and given the wonderful light you enjoy the results should be stunning.

Thanks Richard.
The 1/1.7 sensor of the GRD and its likes is good enough for me, I'm just waiting to get it from the first manufacturer that will pack it inside a sealed compact. I like to have a camera with me at all times, and conditions here are such that WR sealing is a must for me. Of course anything a bit better would be even more tempting : a built-in viewfinder or a larger sensor, and I don't mind what the name of the company is. I really can't understand the lack of such models on the market.

Lovely colours.
I had to Google Ricoh Px.
From you photos and Flickr I am very impressed and am tempted to bid on eBay for one.

Austin

Thanks for looking Austin.

I've had the PX for almost four years. It's a pretty basic tool, but for me its strong points are :
1) ability to take it conveniently with me in my pocket everywhere and at all times. As a farmer, I use it in dusty, wet or dirty conditions, and I am able to take it out in any of these, wipe it off and put it back in my pocket. Actually it also looks nice as it is (maybe even "stylish"?), so it can tick that box as well. Very compact, but user-friendly.
2) in good light it can produce really adequate pics, certainly for monitor viewing. Macro ability is good.

I'd say that if you don't need the weather-proofing and sealing, you'd be better served by many other cameras.

Here's my Flickr album if you want to see more PX (only) shots :

Quester,

You are correct there is not a lot to choose from.
Ricoh/Pentax have the WG cameras - http://www.us.ricoh-imaging.com/waterproof-camera - But they are as ugly as, IMO

Fuji have the FinePix XP Tough Series.
Panasonic FT tough.
Nikon have the some AW Coolpix but probably the biggest sensor in waterproof camera is in the Nikon 1 AW1
I think some of these "flat" cameras have folded optics to achieve the small size.

There are some heavily weather sealed cameras that are not meant to go underwater such as the Olympus EM-5 but of course you need a weather sealed lens. Its not pocketable of course.

The 8Mpixel camera in the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is probably no better than the PX.
