A GRD4 setting you may want to try...

Don/Streetshooter made a remark in some camera comparison blog that if you find you can't see the GRD4 screen you should turn-up the brightness. Well I did and boy does it make a difference.

Menu
3rd level (the screwdriver spanner)
LCD Brightness
Manual
Turn-up (using the up button above Menu OK) as far as you can

Downside....it will shorten the battery life and may make you more obvious in low light shotting.

Upside...you may like me start using the exposure compensation over the full range and obtain better balanced shots.

I have not received my GR IV yet so this is a newbie question. If I'm using a viewfinder can the screen be turned off?

Yes it can. I usually just cycle the screen button till it gets to the off state.
