500G wide - screen off how?

Rather embarrassing, I know, since I own the camera, but I cannot find out how to permanently disable the screen? Whenever I press the shutter for focus that beep screen lights up! Outside it is okay, but inside it is annoying – the viewfinder is there for a reason!

Judging from the user manual it may not be possible but hope that somebody has a fix (apart from covering the screen with a post-it or old Cokin resin filter…)

This is the only significant issue I have with this wonderful camera.

All input much appreciated
Thanks

PS: I also posted this at dpreview in case you see it both places

From the manual page 56:
Synchro-Monitor Mode

This turns the LCD monitor off except when the camera is operated. This mode is effective for saving power consumption. In this mode, pressing the shutter release button halfway turns the LCD monitor on. Subsequently, pressing the shutter release button fully displays the shot image on the LCD monitor and then turns the LCD monitor off.
