40mm with GR

The one thing I miss from going from the GRD II to the GR is the 40mm option. Although it flared sometimes depending on how you controlled it I thought it was a nice piece of glass and sometimes just what I needed for portraits instead of travelling with a larger camera.

I've read and seen results of someone using the 21mm from the GRD range with the 37mm thread on the GR via GH3 with a step ring adapter and it looked surprisingly good without vigneting.

Which leads me to ask - couldn't the 40mm also be attached then and has anyone done it? Regretting selling my 40mm last year as I could have tried it at least to frankestein it in some way.

Hi Nebus,

Our forum host Pavel did quite a bit of testing with the 40mm adapter lens on the GR.

Have a look at his post (Ricoh GR + GT1 - useful or not?) with samples - http://ricohforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7 ... 0mm#p61995
He included some crop vs 40mm samples.

Of course there is 35mm crop mode and I detailed some resolution facts about it in this post - http://ricohforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=7 ... hilit=40mm

I have heard of some street photogs using 35mm crop mode exclusivly on their GRs. They accept the resolution loss and go from there.
The APS-C sensor is quite large so you are still working with a fairly large sensor in crop mode.
I would suggest looking at Pavel's samples that using 35mm crop mode will yield a sharper image as you are using the center part of the lens more.

Personally I quite liked the rendering of the 40mm lens for portraits though. The center is ok, they look flattering to me.
For landscapes, no. I'd use crop mode first.
For some, 35mm is not 40mm so you have to weigh that as well. But the extra physical weight of the 40mm lens is not small either.

Thanks for that Tim,

I should have searched for GT1 instead of 40mm of course and I would have found it. Interesting results. the edge softness is somewhat distracting I think and not like a nice bokeh OOF it had on the GRDII; still, I may try it I think if i can find a GT1 for a good price . Am only looking at this for portrait work mostly.
Thanks again.

:D

Whatever you put on GR, be it very good Ricoh wide adapter or lousy third part 1.5 converter, it contradicts the original idea, compactness. Why not try the other route. GXR with m-mount. Put a MS Perar on it and you`ll have the most compact 52mm set around. Put a collapsible Elmar 50/3.5 on and voila super compact 75mm portrait lens combo. Until Ricoh makes it own solution to the problem, just dont bother lensbabying GR.
